World Food Garden is a networking site for Garden Warriors.
GARDEN WARRIORS
Garden Warriors are individuals who are making choices that help to both a) feed more mouths in the world and b) offset carbon emissions on this planet. Perhaps you are already a Garden Warrior without even realizing it. WorldFoodGarden.org is an infrastructure where people can build their own networks and communities, keep track of their philanthropic efforts directly and maximize their global impact in small, individual ways.
Here are just a few ways to participate:
1) Start your first food garden or Add your existing food garden to grow the World Food Garden Map
The average American meal travels 1500 miles before reaching its destination. Imagine the difference we could make collectively if each of us grew even just our own tomatoes on the back porch!
2) Bring more gardeners and philanthropists into the network
The greater number of people who gain the resources to create a garden and help others create gardens by joining your world food garden network, the greater our collective impact on the world will be. Anytime you bring someone into your network to create a profile on WorldFoodGarden.org they will be asked who referred them and your potential positive impact will increase.
3) Travel to other countries and talk to people in need
All too often the young adventurer sets off to a new land only to become disheartened by the desperation, poverty and despair they encounter. The person then may become inspired to help but doesn't know just how without going through a large organization, making their personal impact difficult to trace, or without making the huge time commitment it would take to join a large service organization, such as the Peace Corps. WorldFoodGarden.org provides individuals with the infrastructure they need to make and trace their positive impact at home and abroad. If you like to travel and talk to new people you can help grow the World Garden by connecting with potential gardeners or families who need seeds and bringing them into your network by creating a profile for them on the map or by locating sources of open pollinated seeds abroad and adding them to the source page on the site for others to use. Sort of like the butterfly who flaps his wings in China to set off a tornado in Texas, your individual positive efforts will be tracked on your profile to show the grand-scale positive effects they will have as the world food garden grows over time.
4) Research
You can have a huge impact on the world as a Garden Warrior from your laptop at home. We need people willing to research and connect with seed companies and community organizations, schools, orphanages abroad to bring them into the fold. We will lay out general guidelines and suggestions and you can take it from there. The more gardeners and foreign seeds suppliers (of open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds) you bring into the fold, the more potential carbon offset you create and potential mouths you feed. Email us if interested.
5) Send Seeds!
As other Garden Warriors populate the map with profiles for individuals and families in need of seeds, and seek out suppliers of open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds, philanthropists from all backgrounds anywhere in the world (with internet) will be able to connect with the potential gardener of their choice via their profile to send them seeds and help them get their garden started. The more seeds you send and that are sent by the people you've brought into your network, the more carbon offset will create and the more mouth you will feed.
6) Classroom to Classroom
Using the WorldFoodGarden.org infrastructure, your classroom can connect with a classroom oversees in an impoverished country to send seeds and share experiences about your respective classroom gardens-- a great tool to study geography, social studies, science- and even math!
7) Be a Garden Mentor
Becoming a great gardener takes a base of knowledge but it also takes experience. If you are an avid gardener and would like to share your experience and knowledge with others, let us know! We will add an icon to your profile so questioning novices will know you that they may contact you through the map (coming soon) to seek direct advice.
8) Anything is Possible!
If you have a new idea for a way Garden Warriors can participate in growing the World Food Garden, let it be known! Email your ideas to us and we will add it to this list. The more Garden Warriors that partake in the idea you have come up with, the more impact you will make. This impact will be tracked on your profile.
Grow the garden network!
