One World Map, Millions of Small Food Gardens

In the economic and environmental crises we face today, knowing how to grow one's own food is a security measure many people have begun to revisit the notion of. This can be seen in the rising popularity of the "Victory Garden" movement- an era during WWI and WWII when 40% of the produce consumed in the US, UK, and Canada was sourced from home gardens.

The fluctuating cost of oil has impacted our food costs in many ways - tractors are used to prepare the ground and harvest, petroleum-based fertilizers are applied to improve growth, then the food is packaged and shipped thousands of miles. In addition to making it harder for families to put food on the table, these carbon emissions contribute to global warming and the increased fuel consumption is increasing international tensions.

World Food Garden is a place where enlightened people of the world are uniting to share, show, and learn the benefits that come from growing one's own food locally, whether it be on a balcony, rooftop, terrace basket, or yard. We aim to visually represent, and assist in bringing about, a new 'Garden Age' by using the internet to offer free, location-specific gardening information and virtual tools that make it easier for anyone, anywhere on the planet to grow a small food garden.

The tools we offer:

• Climate Data* for every location on earth, interfaced with crop data so that you can easily learn what grows in their area and when to plant it.
• Daily Local Weather and Forecast, with tips on what to do in the garden accordingly.
• Garden Wiki, sectioned by climate type and gardening method, where gardeners from all over can freely share their expertise.
• Seed Swap infrastructure- similar to craigslist.org, but for seeds, where gardeners can post extra seeds they have or request specific seeds they are looking for
• World Map of Small Food Gardens, where gardeners can add their garden location to the globe to visually represent their part in the World Food Garden
• Personal Garden Profiles complete with pictures, blog, and climate data where gardeners can share their gardening experiences and personal websites, and also browse the gardens of others
• Garden Planner - a tool which assists the gardener in planning out each planting season for their garden
• Networking - the ability for gardeners to search, find and connect with other gardeners about specific garden related topics
• Language Translator - using Google's translation technology, the WFG site can be accessed in 34 languages around the world
