Baby plants are like baby people: they need protection from cold,
heat, wind, rain and predators and they need to be fed.
To start a plant, place the seed gently in the soil at a depth of
about 4 times the seeds width. if the seeds are tiny, you can broadcast them
lightly over the soil and then broadcast a thin layer of soil over the
seeds.
Some plants will be started in seed trays and transplanted to the
garden after their second set of leaves, called "true leaves", has appeared
and usually after the last frost has past.
